BMS Mahon Blog

The Mahon family are serving in Peru as part of BMS' long-term programme. Based in Iquitos, they are working alongside the Loreto Association of Baptist Churches as they look to implement a sustainability plan over the coming years. They are involved in teaching and curriculum development at the Nauta Integral Mission Training Centre, and also support the running of the centre. Dave and Michele are both Baptist ministers, and have served at Brockley Baptist Church in south-east London for four years. Dave and Michele have three children: Jonathan, Ruth and Phoebe.

‘The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.’ Psalm 145:18 (NIV)

Dear Friends,
We moved to Iquitos two weeks ago after 6 months of language acquisition in Arequipa. We are so glad to be here! After Dave completed his first sermon in Spanish, we said our farewell speeches at the language school in Arequipa, we packed up our things and now we are here at our final stop, Iquitos.  We are thankful to God that our house is becoming a home. We have plenty of space for visitors so do consider yourselves invited! However, the heat and humidity, the noise of motorcars is also quite an adjustment, we are slowly getting used to the Peruvian lifestyle here in Iquitos. Our new friends, work colleagues and neighbours are very friendly and helpful. It has been a real encouragement hearing their stories of mission whilst getting to know their families. Looking back, we are so grateful for your prayers and support for us as a family.

We would love your prayers for the following.

Prayers of Thanks

  • Thanks to God that our language training and cultural adaptation has made a real difference
  • Our immigration documents for us to work here have now been received
  • Jonathan, Ruth and Phoebe are thriving here in their new environment, both in school and in
    community life.
  • We are currently all in good health body, soul and spirit!

Prayers of petition

  • The children as they settle into their new schools here in Iquitos, the new year of term starts in
    March here.
  • The weather is extremely hot and humid. We are slowly adjusting to the climate. Prayers for
good health and our safety would be beneficial.
  • That we will grow in confidence in our communication in Spanish. We both will be called upon to represent the  Association here. The ability to be able to preach, teach and write course material
as we coordinate the work at the Bible Training centre in Nauta.
  • That we will have opportunity to use these first few months to settle well, whilst forming long lasting social and  working relationships with local people, as well as the Baptist churches here in the
    Loreto region.
  • We think of you often; we pray for you too; we entrust you into God’s hands.

With every blessing and much love

Dave, Michele, Jonathan, Ruth and Phoebe
